Jeanne Shaheen, the most senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, urged the administration to provide lawmakers with complete details of the agreement without delay. Emphasizing Congress's oversight role, Shaheen stated that legislators must be informed immediately and would review any nuclear-related agreement in accordance with legal requirements.
While welcoming the renewed diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran, Shaheen described the shift toward diplomacy as “long overdue.” However, she argued that the principal objectives of the conflict had not been achieved and raised concerns about the administration’s overall strategy during the war.
Sharply criticizing President Trump’s handling of the conflict, Shaheen said the administration entered the war without a clear plan for bringing it to an end. She also pointed to what she described as the president’s “ever-shifting statements,” suggesting a lack of consistency in the administration’s approach throughout the conflict.
The senator further argued that the United States emerged from the conflict in a weaker position than when it began. Citing the deaths of 14 American service members and the impact of rising inflation, Shaheen said the costs of the conflict had significantly affected the country. “There’s no question that America’s position is weaker now than at the beginning of the conflict,” she stated.
Her remarks underscore the growing political and legislative scrutiny surrounding the Iran agreement, particularly as Congress prepares to examine the terms of any potential nuclear arrangement. The demand for an immediate briefing highlights the importance of transparency and congressional oversight as the administration moves forward with its diplomatic engagement with Iran.
